The Air Race Classic held their annual women-only event this year celebrating 100 years of licensed female pilots. The racers had four days to complete 2157.68 nautical miles.
This year’s race started from my home airport, Page Field in Fort Myers, FL (FMY) and finished in Frederick, MD(FDK). There were 58 teams and over 100 pilots this year, and the top prize went to Team Wild Mama, from right here in SW Florida!
Wild Mama’s team members include:
- Terry Carbonell, Pilot – A late bloomer, she learned to fly, in her words, “at the ripe ole’ age of 44″
- Ellen Herr, Co-Pilot – A Private Pilot since 1972, and an avid cross country flyer
- YING GAO (LAURA), Teammate – A fledgling Pilot who just learned to drive and fly last year
- and of course the plane to flew them into victory, a 1978 Cessna 182RG tail number: 614WM
